DUXBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — State and local police are investigating in Duxbury after two young children were found dead and a third gravely injured at a home on Tuesday night.
The Plymouth County D.A. says police were called to 47 Summer Street by a male resident, for a report of a woman who had tried to commit suicide by jumping from a second story window.
When they got to the scene, police discovered three children under the age of five, all unconscious with what the D.A called "obvious signs of trauma." A five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy were pronounced dead. Another child, an 8-month-old baby, was airlifted to a local hospital and is still being treated. Officials couldn't comment on the cause of death, but did say that it appeared the woman was the children's mother.
Mass. General Hospital confirmed that the woman works there, and said it was "shocked and saddened to learn of this unthinkable tragedy."
Residents in the normally-quiet neighborhood were shocked at the news Wednesday morning.
"We work with these people all the time, we see them, they stop by... it's just really a gut punch. It's devastating, you just can't imagine it. I'm really praying for the family," said one neighbor.
Investigators stressed that this does not appear to be a random incident and there's no threat to neighbors or the surrounding community. D.A. Tim Cruz called the deaths an "unimaginable, senseless tragedy."
None of the people in the incident were identified as of Tuesday night, as police were still notifying next-of-kin. A press conference with the D.A's office was scheduled for 3:30 PM on Wednesday.
