BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) Two people were killed when a small plane crashed onto Interstate 195 in Dartmouth on Monday morning, according to Massachusetts State Police.

MassDOT continues to investigate the incident, closing off the high-speed lanes on both I-95 eastbound and westbound at exit 19 until 8 p.m. Tuesday. The exit 19B ramp onto I-95 westbound will also be closed. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes.

Both sides of I-195 were shut down Monday while police secured the scene. Most lanes had been reopened except for the left-most eastbound lane, as of 3:50 p.m.

The plane crashed onto the median and caught fire, resulting in the death of both people aboard the plane. Police said they got word of the crash at 8:15 a.m.

Authorities said the plane took off from New Bedford Regional Airport. Earlier, police said it appeared the plane was trying to land at the airport, but it did not seem like the pilot provided the airport with a flight plan or the number of people aboard the flight.

Video and photos posted on social media shows a car damaged in the median. The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said the woman driving the car was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victims were identified as married couple Thomas Perkins, 68, and Agatha Perkins, 66, of Middletown, R.I., according to the DA's Office.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause and manner of the crash.
