BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two local chefs going head-to-head in a live cooking competition at Lincoln Tavern and Restaurant in South Boston on Wednesday night, all for a good cause.
Chef Jamie Bissonnette and Chef Andrew Grosse are expected to dish up some original culinary creations in the first ever Battle of the Bites competition.
The event is hosted by Spoonfuls, a food recovery non-profit based in Boston and near-and-dear to Chef Bissonnette.
“I’ve been a part of since its inception,” he told WBZ NewsRadio. “We specialize in saving food that [otherwise will be] going to be thrown away from grocery store produce departments.”
Bissonnette is the 2014 winner of the James Beard Ward for Best Chef in the Northeast. He is the head chef of Somaek, a traditional Korean restaurant, and Temple Records, a Japanese cocktail bar.
He added that all the food they save is redistributed the same day to homeless shelters and other organizations.
“As a chef, you’re taught as a young cook to never waste anything,” he said, all the while taking that same mentality when getting involved in Spoonfuls.
Chef Grosse is the executive chef for The Lobster Trap in Bourne and has been in the culinary world for nearly two decades.
All the proceeds from Battle of Bites will be donated to reduce food waste and fight hunger.
