PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two more North Atlantic right whale calves and their mothers were spotted Thursday in Cape Cod Bay.
A total of three baby whales have been seen in Cape Cod Bay this season. Previously, a whale calf and its mother were spotted on Sunday April 7, according to the Center for Coast Studies.
One mother and calf pair was spotted Thursday in the southern part of the bay, while the other pair was spotted in the middle of the bay.
One of the whale mothers, identified as EgNo 4180, was previously seen with her calf off the coast of Florida in February. This sighting confirmed she was female, which was previously unknown.
The other whale mother, EgNo 3317, was born to a whale named Silt, who was also seen in Cape Cod Bay this season.
According to the Center for Coastal Studies, 219 North Atlantic right whales have been identified in Cape Cod Bay out of 411 total.
