ASHLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — For many New Englanders, the Boston Marathon is an event that people flock to watch and cheer on runners along the grueling 26.2-mile route. For some, however, watching the Marathon may even be considered a sport on its own.
“We’ve come here for at least 30 years,” Lisa from Lancaster said. She brought her son Owen who has come with her to watch the race from the same spot year after year. This year however, they are watching the race to cheer on a family member.
“We’re rooting for Owen’s uncle Andrew Schulert who is running for the first time. He said he watched it for 50 years and now it’s time to run it,” Lisa added.
It was five years ago at the same viewing location that Lisa and her son met other fellow spectators Kathy and Christopher. They have become “Marathon buddies” and have met at the same spot every year since to watch the race together.
“We [only] meet once a year [to watch the race], but we know that we’ll be here, everyone does,” Kathy said.
