Uber Fighting Proposed Logan Airport Rideshare Fee Hikes

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Uber has taken to the airwaves to fight a proposal that would raise rideshare fees in and out of Logan Airport up to $15 per roundtrip.

Massport said it has been meeting with companies like Uber and Lyft to discuss the idea.

Massport said with passenger volume rising and clogging up the airport's narrow roadways, the agency is considering ways to reduce traffic while raising money to improve airport infrastructure.

Uber has come out against the proposal with a six-figure digital ad campaign to rally public opposition to the plan.

The company said the tax hike would give Logan the highest combined round-trip surcharges at any airport in the world.

Meantime, Massport said Uber would be better served putting the money it used for the ad campaign towards lower rates.

Early Tuesday morning outside Terminal A, rideshare drivers said they are adopting a “wait-and-see” approach.

"I know that everything goes up, and if we get paid for that, that would be good," one driver said. "But to raise it, that's not good."

Another was more ambivalent. "You can stand out in the rain and fight over it. I do this to keep me occupied, keep the mind working."

This driver said he was concerned more about who pays for the increase. "I hope it's not me paying for it," he said.

While another driver was more direct in his opposition. "Altogether I'd say it's a terrible idea."

Massport's board will review the proposal and could vote on it Mar. 20.
