BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Uber users in Boston will notice a new option when they open the app. On Wednesday, the company introduced the new "Route Share" feature, calling it the "most affordable ride option," available.
This budget-friendly feature is designed to resemble public transportation, offering rides along busy routes with pickups every 20 minutes. Bostonians can catch a ride during morning and evening commute hours between 6-10 a.m. and 4-8 p.m., Monday through Friday, with up to two other people.
While some are interested in the feature marketed as up to 50% cheaper than UberX, they don't see themselves utilizing it.
"I think it probably could work well. Personally, I probably don't think I'd take advantage of it, but I can see how it would work for a lot of people to fill in the gaps," says Jerry of Boston.
To access the new feature, users will insert their pickup and drop-off locations and receive nearby pickup routes. Once they select the route, they will walk to their pick-up location where drivers will wait for 2 minutes after they arrive.
The initial launch of the new feature will be available in certain cities including New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Baltimore, and of course Boston, with more cities to come.
