UMass Amherst Students Petition To Be Let On Campus

AMHERST, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – Three students at UMass Amherst are asking the university to let them back on campus – along with all their peers who can’t realistically do their classes offline.

Hannah Lieberman, Brooke Morrison, and Sarah La Padula are all dance majors. In a petition to the university administration, the three students say students in certain classes and majors, like dance, music or science labs, should be allowed on campus. The petition has gained almost 300 signatures since Monday.

For the Spring 2021 semester, the university has invited freshmen and incoming transfer students back to campus.

Since the semester began, the school has had a massive spike in Covid cases, nearly 350 in the last week.

The class has been forced to go all-remote in response to the surge.

The petition says many of the students who have come back have been socializing and breaking university rules.
