SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Amanda Escamilla had plenty of her packaged tamales on hand at the Union Square farmers market in Somerville Saturday.
"I’ve been selling my tamales at farmers markets for probably over ten years now, so I make hundreds of tamales every week," Escamilla told WBZ NewsRadio.

As chef-owner of Tex Mex Eats, Escamilla was one of nearly three dozen vendors selling their goods at the Union Square market, which is celebrating its 20th season this year. Escamilla said what makes this particular market special is its diversity and the closeness of the community.
"I’ve come to know a lot of my customers and their families, and I look forward to talking with the people that I talk to every Saturday morning, I really do," Escamilla said.
The sentiment was shared by vendors and customers alike.
"This is is probably one of the ones with the best community," said David Wadleigh, who owns Kimball Fruit Farm in Pepperell with his wife Amanda. "People stop and talk to each other for ten minutes in the middle of shopping."
"It’s unbelievable, the people here are crazy, so cool," said Adil, owner of Olive World. "I love everything about the market. The vendors, also, it’s like an assortment of all kinds of stuff you can find here. All small businesses, love it."
"It’s the best of them all," said Debra, a customer from Arlington. "The best selection, the nicest people, best quality."
The Union Square farmers market is open every Saturday (except Sept. 21) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Oct. 26. The market accepts SNAP benefits and will also match up to $15 for SNAP customers.
