BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — High over Jersey Street, right above Gate A, vegetables grow in rows on Fenway Park's rooftop.

An array of crops sprout from the soil on the little patch: tomatoes, basil and eggplants, to name a few. Those vegetables make up 20 percent of the stadium's produce.

Fenway Park's is just one of 180 urban gardens around Boston owned and operated by Green City Growers.

"This is not rocket science," Green City Growers CEO Christopher Grallert said. "We're taking what's been going on for 10 thousand years or so and bringing it up on a rooftop."

Green City Growers is a for-profit business. Property owners pay Green City Growers a fee for setting up and maintaining vegetable gardens on their rooftops. In exchange, the property owners keep whatever crops the patches produce.

The company partners with several organizations across Boston aside from Fenway Park, including the Museum of Science, Boston University, and Boston Public Schools.
