BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A celebration for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) was held Friday at the Boston Convention Center in honor of their 250th year of service.

Montilio's Bakery provided a 500-pound cake for the event. Decorated in red, white, and blue, the multi-tiered dessert was topped with a golden eagle statue.

“We got four marines that will be pushing the cake in front of 2,100 people, no pressure,” Commanding Officer Major Courtney Thompson said.

Although the cake was made to be consumed, it also was a symbol of the history of the USMC.

“I will pass the first piece to our guest of honor, General Mahoney. The second piece of cake goes to our oldest marine present, he takes a bite and then passes to the youngest marine present symbolizing the passing of knowledge and the history of the Corp,” Thompson said.

History and tradition were the theme of the historic birthday.

“To be a part of those who come before us and those who will come after us,” Master of Ceremonies Lieutenant Elias Elais said.
