BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to USA Today readers, Boston is home to one of the best free attractions in the country.

The Freedom Trail comes in fifth place in the reader survey of top free U.S. places to visit.

The Freedom Trail’s marked red line guides visitors along a 2.5-mile hike that features 16 nationally historic sites including Paul Revere’s House, Copps Hill Burying Ground, and the Old North Church.

Visitors to the Freedom Trail agreed that the trail not only deserves its high ranking in the survey, if anything, it should be listed higher. “I’ve done it before and it’s really cool to see all the history in this one location,” a visitor said. “It’s an easy walk, it’s beautiful, and it’s really fun.”

When told the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas is number one in the survey, a visitor disagreed with that ranking. “I would take the Freedom Trail over the Alamo,” she said. “This is where it all started in America.”

Rounding out the survey’s top five free attractions in the country are all located in Florida: the Manatee Viewing Center (2) at Apollo Beach, the Loggerhead Marine Center (3) in Juno Beach, and Venice Beach (4).
