USDA Announces Nearly $1.5 Million For Clean Energy On New England Farms

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The United States Department of Agriculture announced nearly $1.5 million in grant funding for clean energy projects at farms and businesses around southern New England Monday.

Eight Massachusetts sites received $969,095. Three farms and businesses in Connecticut received $423,873. Sodco, Inc. in Rhode Island received $98,385.

“These investments matter to the people who operate these farms and businesses as well as the people who live in Southern New England,” USDA Rural Development State Director Scott Soares said in a press release.

Officials said wind, solar and geothermal power will save farms money. Farm owners can then invest those savings in new jobs and revenue streams.

Wahnee-Taconic Berkshire Associates Inc. in Hinsdale, Mass. received the most funding. $434,378 will pay for a new roof-mounted "solar system" that will generate enough electricity to power 25 homes every year, according to the press release.

Other sites received funding for geothermal heat pumps, biomass furnace boiler systems and ground-mounted solar systems.

Massachusetts' had a larger clean energy capacity than 19 other states in 2023, according to the American Clean Power Association.

Funding came courtesy of the Rural Energy for America Program, according to the press release. Sites can apply for REAP funding until Sept. 30, 2024.
