USPS: Upgrade Your Mailbox For 'Mailbox Improvement Week'

BOSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — This week is "Mailbox Improvement Week" -- and you can celebrate by impressing your mail carrier with an upgraded or new mailbox.

According to Stephen Doherty, a spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, the nationwide rise in delivery services has many homeowners opting for a newer model.

"A lot of people now are upgrading because they're getting more and more packages by mail, as opposed to what used to be just letters and magazines," Doherty said. "They're upgrading to a larger sized box that will accommodate the packages."

Even if you don't feel like buying a new one, Doherty said you should still make sure the one you have is in good shape -- especially after the cold weather months.

"Coming out of the winter season now, you know, your box may have taken a beating, been hit by the plow a couple of times, we'd like you to take a look at it," Doherty said.

That might include things like replacing a rusty hinge, straightening it up if it has been pushed over -- or replacing the street number so it is easier to identify.
