BRIGHTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Veronica B. Smith Senior Center in Brighton rolled out the red carpet for its 2024 "Senior" Prom Friday afternoon.

The Las Vegas-themed event had a live band, food from the Corrib Pub, a magician, an Elvis Presley impersonator, and an appearance from Mayor Michelle Wu.

"So happy to see our seniors who have done so much for the community getting to just kick back, relax, and be together," Wu told WBZ NewsRadio. "I had three seniors come up to me and say if this event weren’t happening, they would be at home by themselves. That sense of loneliness and isolation that we’re trying to counter, it does so much good for the entire community."

Wu also put on her dancing shoes and hit the dance floor with Boston's elder residents.

"We’ve had three senior events in the last week. I’ve gotten a lot of exercise trying to keep up with our seniors here," Wu laughed.

The title of Prom Queen went to 84-year-old Florence Williams, who was more than happy to wear the crown.

"I feel wonderful, excited, and happy. It brings back a lot of good memories," Williams said of the prom. "It’s really wonderful, it’s giving all of us elderly people a chance to have a life of our own. The best part is we make friends."
