MT. WASHINGTON, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A rare zodiacal light could be seen from the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire Wednesday morning.

Mount Washington Observatory captured the phenomenon before sunrise, and posted photos on their social media pages. The occurrence is also known as false dawn.

"It is formed by sunlight reflecting off space dust...in a plane spanning between Mercury and Jupiter," Ryan Knapp, a Mount Washington Observatory meteorologist, wrote in a 2017 blog post.

According to NASA, research from 2021 suggests that the space dust may be coming from Mars.
