CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A vigil is planned Monday evening for the MIT student killed in a bicycle crash in Cambridge last week.

Minh-Thi Nguyen, 24, was riding through the intersection of Hampshire and Portland streets Friday morning when a truck making a right onto Portland Street crashed into her bike, police said.

Nguyen was rushed to the hospital, where he died of her injuries. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, according to police.

A makeshift memorial with flowers and notes has been set up at the intersection where the crash happened. Monday night's vigil will also take place at the intersection.

Nguyen's death was the second fatal crash involving a cyclist and a truck in Cambridge this month. On June 7, a box truck struck and killed a 55-year-old woman riding a Blue Bike. Officials said the truck was turning right onto DeWolfe Street from Mt. Auburn Street when the crash occurred.

Bicycle safety advocates are now calling for better safety infrastructure.

"I turn right every day to get onto my street and I can’t see the bikes that are coming when I turn," said Jackie, a Cambridge resident. "You have to be so careful because the parked cars are blocking that visibility. I don’t know if it was part of what happened, but it’s just so sad."

"Definitely very infuriating," said Raea, another Cambridge resident. "I know that Cambridge has tried to do its best with its biking lanes, but I feel like it’s more so on the vehicles that are driving and not watching out for pedestrians and cyclists."
