BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Spring has finally arrived and that's great news for the volunteers working in the Rose Kennedy Rose Garden.
Located in Boston's North End in the middle of Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, the garden is surrounded by a granite and wrought-iron fence with many varieties of flowers but mostly roses.
Robyn Reed is co-chair of the Horticulture Committee for the Friends of the Christopher Columbus Park.
She and a team of volunteers are rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty sprucing up the garden for the new season. "We wait all winter long to come in here and start raking and weeding and watching the beautiful blossoms just spring to life," Reed said.
The work Reed and the volunteers are doing now pays off in June when the flowers erupt. "It is gorgeous, and everyone comes by to have their pictures taken," Reed said. "We have weddings here, we have all sorts of celebrations, and everyone wants the roses as a backdrop to their photographs."
This peaceful, oasis tucked between the ocean and Atlantic Avenue honors America’s Gold Star Mothers as well as Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, mother of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
American Gold Star Mothers is a veterans' service organization that provides support for mothers who lost sons or daughters while serving the U.S. Armed Forces.
