BEVERLY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Voters all across the state are casting ballots this Election Day,.
Dozens of people lined up to vote at the Beverly Public Library at 7 a.m.
“I believe in the mail-in votes and early votes, but I prefer to fill out the circle and put it in the machine, it feels more official,” said one local resident.
Many others in line agreed, saying they appreciated the atmosphere and the “real experience” of voting on election day, one resident said.
“It’s a little more exciting, you get to feel the process and be with other people and see your neighbors, and I think that's an important part of being in the United States,” said another local resident.
Voters said they were quite sure about their vote for president, but some of the five questions on the Massachusetts ballot proved to be tricky.
A few of those in line said they thought long and hard about Question 2, which if passed would eliminate the MCAS graduation requirement. Question 4, which would legalize and regulate psychedelic substances, and Question 5, which would increase wages for tipped workers, also had some voters on the fence.
Polls in Massachusetts are open until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and mail-in ballots are accepted at ballot boxes and local election offices until 8 p.m. as well. Mail-in ballots sent by mail must be postmarked by Tuesday, election day.
About a third of the state’s registered voters cast their ballot early, and Secretary of State William F. Galvin said he expects voter turnout in Massachusetts to break records this year.
