SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the City of Salem prepares to celebrate an important milestone, it needs to find a name for a particular black cat.

Salem will celebrate its 400th anniversary in 2026, with all sorts of fun and educational events on the horizon.

The Witch City fittingly decided on a black cat as the mascot for Salem 400+ festivities. It was created by artist Karen Hallion and inspired by “Hanepyon,” the rabbit mascot of Salem’s Sister City Ota, Japan.

Elementary and middle school students in the town have submitted possible name selections, like Binx, Midnight, Lightning Little, and more. Anyone can vote for the final name on the Salem 400+ website by ranking their top five choices.

The poll closes at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31st, and the winner will be announced in January.
