At a press conference on Tuesday, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the city hopes to honor Wakefield’s legacy on and off the field.

“This a big blow to have such sudden and unexpected news,” said Wu. “All of us in Boston I know are sending our deepest condolences and gratitude to the Wakefield family and everyone who he loved.”

One proposal on X, formally known as Twitter, suggested changing the name of Jersey Street, located right outside Fenway Park, to Wakefield Way. Although a formal proposal has not been submitted, Mayor Wu entertained that idea as a possibility.

“I fully support any efforts to make sure that his legacy is forever held up in Boston as a reminder of what it means to be on the team, to inspire so many others and to make sure you’re living that out in all parts of your life,” said Wu.
