REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It’s a classic New Year’s resolution: exercise more. But getting off the couch and to the gym can be easier said than done. Even if you start off strong, sprinting after days of holiday-induced food comas, keeping up the motivation over time is sometimes even more challenging.

“This time of year is definitely a busy time,” Steven Lombardi, regional director at Planet Fitness, said. “Everyone’s making their New Year’s resolutions. They want to start the year off on the right foot.”

So how do you keep up the momentum? Lombardi says it’s good to start slow, and to have “very achievable goals.”

“It’s just coming into the gym. It’s creating a routine,” he said. That way you don’t get overwhelmed.

Also, there’s safety in numbers. Lombardi said having a “workout buddy” is another way to “help yourself stay accountable.”

“There’s plenty of people that want to come work out,” he said.

If you want to avoid the crowds, Lombardi said the gym is usually the busiest before work from 6:30-8:30 a.m., and then after work from about 4-8 p.m.

The way people are working out is changing too. “Recently, we’ve seen a trend towards strength equipment,” Lombardi said.
