BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Newly released MBTA video footage shows Red Line trains with no one aboard rolling through Braintree Station in late May. One of the cars had been scheduled for air conditioning repair, and the string of cars came loose when Red Line workers were trying to uncouple it.
The video shows the unmanned train coasting though Braintree Station as several confused bystanders look on. The T said the train eventually came to a stop on its own and no one was injured.
A Red Line supervisor is suspended as the investigation continues.
The MBTA said it is retraining its employees on proper "coupling procedure," and said coupling is now only supposed to be done in rail yards.
The T has seen a rash of safety issues pop up over the last few months, culminating in a federal investigation that gave several urgent safety orders.
