BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A few dozen people rallying in support of police outside the State House on Saturday were met by hundreds of counter-protestors on the Boston Common.
The "Restore Sanity" rally, organized by a group called Super Happy Fun America, was one of dozens of protests planned over the weekend in Massachusetts.
However, while most protest organizers said they are supporting racial equality and police reform, SHFA said its supporters were walking "in support of law enforcement," while "call[ing] on the nation’s citizens and elected officials to restore sanity."
In response to SHFA's pro-police rally outside the State House, hundreds of people gathered behind police barricades across the street, many chanting and holding signs that said "Black Lives Matter."
Video showed dozens of police officers lining the street in between the two groups, mostly facing the crowd on the Common.
The organizers of the counter-rally, entitled "All Out Against White Supremacy!", said SHFA is "the same group that threw the Straight Pride Parade, where so many of us were brutalized by the police."
According to the Boston Globe, SHFA has has denied its organizers and events are bigoted, although it has ties to the far right.
Thousands of other residents also marched in separate protests on Saturday held in Copley Square, Cambridge, and Jamaica Plain.
