BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — YMCA of Greater Boston celebrated Read Across America Week with some special guest readers Tuesday.

Over 65 volunteers read to children at 26 YMCA of Greater Boston locations, including WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens.

Carl read "I Am Enough" by Grace Byers to a group of preschoolers at the East Boston YMCA Early Education Center.

East Boston YMCA Executive Director Joe Gaeta told WBZ NewsRadio the event is an opportunity to highlight the importance of reading for kids.

"This is definitely aimed at getting kids excited about reading at an early age, and it’s been reported that most likely children who are subject to reading and get involved in reading early have a less likelihood to drop out of school," Gaeta said.

"About 95 percent of our community is Latinx, so it’s super important that we educate our community on the importance of, you know, reading to our children, reading to each other, especially literacy," Gaeta continued. "As kids get older, it creates barriers if they’re not able to read or write or things like that, so it’s super important at an early age."
