BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — For more than 70 years, the weather beacon on top of the Berkeley Building — or the Old John Hancock Building — has been synonymous with Boston's skyline. It was turned off for repairs back in the spring. But as of this week, it's back to giving quick weather forecasts with steady blue or flashing red lights.

John Hancock, which is headquartered there, said the repairs included installing more efficient LED lights.

"All the testing that has to be done on the modernized lighting has been taken care of. It’s lit except for the time the workers will be there,” Tom Samoluk, general counsel at John Hancock, told WBZ NewsRadio.

He said the response they received after the beacon went dark was eye-opening.

“We really understood even more that people notice and rely on it, and they like the beacon,” Samoluk said. "It's part of the Boston history. It's part of the skyline."

There is still more work to be done and scaffolding will be up through October.
