WELLESLEY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Wellesley High School junior Charlie Velyvis finished his Driver's Ed course last spring, learning the rules of the road.
But what he didn't learn, he told WBZ NewsRadio's Kim Tunnicliffe, was some basic car maintenance and safety skills.
"There was nothing about how to do any of this stuff—changing a tire, oil, or anything," Velyvis said. "So, we thought of a class that would teach new drivers these other important elements of what you need as a driver."
He was unsuccessful in finding a class that would teach those kinds of things, but discovered that Massachusetts Bay Community College has it's own auto program.
"I think it would be very helpful for every driver to know how to fix their car by themselves," he said. "As a high school student, I noticed most of my classmates also have no idea how to do any of this stuff."
He's now teaming up with the college, which is adding a class to teach young drivers basic car maintenance.
Velyvis said the course will cover much more than changing a flat.
"What goes on under the hood, what to do in an accident if you're ever in that situation," he explained. "Inspection sticker dates, knowing what those mean."
The first class will be held Sunday, December 8 at Mass Bay's Ashland campus.
