BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — State and city leaders joined members of the Greater Boston Food Bank Wednesday morning for the 19th annual Chain of Giving event.
Volunteers, including Wellesley's Ten Acre Girl Scout Troop, formed a chain to unload 1,200 frozen turkeys from a truck.
The turkeys are being stored at the food bank until they'll be donated to people in need for Thanksgiving.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the effort is helping to address a serious issue in our communities.
"The face of food insecurity is a much broader group than anyone realizes," Wu said. "People are working and doing their very best, and still, with prices where they are, need that extra bit of support."
One of the scouts said she had a blast unloading turkeys with her friends and supporting a great cause.
"That was really fun, and I really liked it," Lais Caixtea said. "And I really appreciate my troop that they helped me."
The GBFB awarded the troop the Nally Award for donating their Girl Scouts Cookie fund to the organization.
The GBFB established the award in 2006 to recognize a young person or persons who have taken action to end hunger in their community.
"It made us feel really accomplished because we would come to every meeting and it was really fun to see us win an award," Annika Wewers said.
Once the truck was unloaded, the girl scout troop posed for a group picture with Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll.
