IPSWICH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A 46-year-old Wellesley man died Sunday after he was injured in a mountain biking accident at the Willowdale State Forest in Ipswich.
The forest on the north shore is a popular destination for mountain bikers, with races often held on its sprawling network of trails. The unidentified victim had traveled there with a friend on Sunday to bike the trails, when he reportedly crashed on the icy terrain.
Although he was wearing full protective gear, first responders said he was critically injured.
The man's friend was found performing CPR on the victim when firefighters arrived on an All-Terrain Vehicle at around 12:30 p.m., but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, along with officials from the state medical examiners office, assisted in the victim's removal from deep within the woods.
