WELLESLEY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Wellesley police are warning residents about a recent influx of mail theft-related check fraud reports.
The Wellesley Police Department said it appears that thieves have obtained keys to blue United States Postal Service mailboxes and are stealing people's checks from the mail.
"Checks that are stolen from the mail are altered, rewritten, and deposited into various bank accounts," Wellesley police said. "Additionally, your checks contain your personal information and your bank account number – this information can easily be sold online if one of your checks falls into the wrong hands."
Police are advising residents not to use the blue mailboxes or their own mailboxes to send letters and checks. Instead, they should go inside a physical post office and mail letters from inside the building.
Wellesley police are working with other law enforcement agencies in the investigation.
