Cambridge, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The sound of construction has been echoing through Cambridge, Mass. for a while now.
The City of Cambridge is in the middle of their Five Year Plan for Sidewalk and Street Reconstruction program, aiming to design streets for all users. Although the construction will help in the future, Kendall Kitchen Owner Hratch Adourian is more concerned with the present.
“There are signs that say sidewalk closed, so even if you wanted to come across the street, you can’t get here,” said Adourian.
Adourian said Kendall Kitchen has lost roughly half their customers since the construction started.
“It’s been very painful. We’re in emergency mode. We’re in dire straits at this point. I think this construction project is going to be the last nail in the coffin for us,” said Adourian.
Residents in Cambridge have also been impacted, waking up every day to the sound of construction equipment.
“It’s been going on for so many months it makes it sometimes a little challenging to get to your house,” said one resident.
“They’ve got to do it so what are you going to do. You know, when you’re digging a big hole in the ground, you’re going to make noise,” said another resident.
The City of Cambridge said keeping business open during construction is a priority and that the work must be done to update infrastructure and prevent potential flooding.
City officials also stated that there have been public meetings where community members have been able to come and voice concerns.
