BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Pastry dough-based treats have existed for centuries. Deep-fried cakes coated in sugar were introduced to America by Dutch settlers. American sailor Captain Hanson Gregory is credited for cutting the infamous hole in the middle of the ring-shaped doughnuts that we see in shops like Anna's Hand Cut Do-Nuts in West Roxbury today.
"What a life you know, I tell ya. A cup of coffee and a plain donut," said one patron who has been dipping coffee in donuts at Anna's since 1964. "Life is good."
Recently, Boston Licensing Board issued a food-serving license to Chaufan Bun, who purchased the beloved shop from owner Konstantinos Keskinidis. So far, the regulars seem to approve of the new owner's performance.
"Apparently he was from Twin Donuts. He worked over there and came here. Started his own business," said one donut enthusiast.
"Nice and crispy on the outside. Soft, nice, and fluffy on the inside. Excellent donut," remarked another patron.
The 18-seat shop serves donuts and other breakfast items starting at 6:00 a.m. every day, and according to the loyal customers that eat there regularly, they have no plans to stop visiting their favorite spot.
"They're the best donuts in West Roxbury. Right here," said one local.
