WESTWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A popular ice cream stand and restaurant in Westwood will be lacking quite a few menu items when it returns for the 2023 season next month.
Marie and Brian Adams, joint owners of Bubbling Brook Ice Cream at 1652 High St. in Westwood, announced on Facebook Monday that they will close their kitchen and stop serving take-out food when the restaurant reopens on Wednesday, April 5.
"After much consideration, due to some changes in staffing and wanting more of a work/life balance for our young family, our kitchen will not reopen this year. We look forward to serving ice cream to our loyal customers that we have been serving for years," the Facebook post read.
"This year we just had some staffing changes," Marie Adams told WBZ NewsRadio Thursday concerning the kitchen closure. "A few people decided they weren’t going to return and wanted more full time, year-round work."
Adams stressed the decision was also so her family "can spend more time with each other, not just here at work, which we all love, but it’s not your home with your children. They’re 3 and 4, I’ve missed so much."
The menu change was met with some backlash on social media, with some people complaining in the comments of the Facebook post that the loss of items like Bubbling Brook's famous fried clams and onion rings was not worth the drive anymore.
"Wow. Huge mistake," one person commented.
"No clams and onion rings? What’s the point?" another person said.
"I love the food more than anyone, it’s all delicious," Adams said. "It’s going to be hard for all of us, but it’s an opportunity for us personally. We’re a family business and I hope people can understand that and respect our decision. We’ll certainly lose that business, I know, but hopefully we’ll have new offerings and people will still come and support the place they know and love and have come to their whole lives."
