BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston, get your winter gear ready. The oncoming weekend blast of arctic air is expected to bring bone-chilling temperatures to Greater Boston and the rest of Massachusetts.
A Wind Chill Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, which says Boston is in store for wind chills as low as -30 or lower on Friday night and Saturday morning. Accuweather's RealFeel puts that wind chill at -47. The real temperatures will be about -10. That number is almost unheard of in recent years, but a check-in with the rest of the globe demonstrates exactly how cold that really is:
- Well within the Arctic Circle, the temperatures in Svalbard, Norway on Friday night will drop to one degree, with a wind chill of -11.
- The South Pole will see temperatures of -30, with wind chills of -56.
- Fairbanks, Alaska will feel like -27 on Saturday, with an actual temperature of -10.
With the kind of wind chills Boston is expecting the National Weather Service warned frostbite can occur on exposed skin within ten minutes.
