CAMBRIDGE, Mass.(WBZ NewsRadio— Gardeners have a warning to pet owners thinking about planting spring flowers in their homes.

Nicole at the Pemberton Farms Marketplace's Garden Center in Cambridge said not all pretty plants are pet-friendly.

“Lilies are never a safe option,” she told WBZ NewsRadio. “They’re actually very poisonous dangerous to cats and dogs as well.”

That’s why the Garden Center puts up cards next to their plants to let customers know which ones are beginner and pet-environment-friendly, including Colocasia varieties, Bella Palms, and Prayer Plants.

“Spider plant super easy, very beginner friendly, very hardy,” Nicole added, and having the wrong plants could result in an unwarranted visit to the vet.

“Usually, it’s not a lethal dose of whatever it is that the animal eats unless it’s the whole thing then maybe that’s a vet visit.”

Nevertheless, Nicole said it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“If you want to have them in the home, you want to make sure that kitty cats and puppy dogs is not going to take a little chomp out of it,” she said.
