CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — White Mountain Creamery in Chestnut Hill is handing out its last scoops Sunday.
The family-owned business announced they will be ceasing operations after nearly 40 years.
The shop has been a staple spot for the Boston College community since opening in 1983, and some students said they were shocked and saddened by the news.
“[I had] good memories of student nights here,” one student told WBZ NewsRadio. “My first week [with] my new friends, that was one of the first spots we went. I’ve also had one of my first dates there.”
Co-owners and brothers, George and Peter Coufos, thanked the loyal customers and community members who brought them many fond memories over the years.
Michael Stewart, a worker at the shop, said the outpouring love and support had been overwhelming.
“We have people calling in [and] coming in talking about ‘oh I met my spouse here, I found out I was going to be a father here for the first time’,” he said.
He added that merchandise and ice creams have also been flying off the shelves.
“We had a number of t-shirts, those sold out very quickly,” he continued. “There’s been a huge outpouring of love.”
A New City MicroCreamery is going to replace the business that's expected to open on Dec. 1.
“You never want to see a beloved place like this close, but if it has to happen, if it can be accompanied by the outpouring love that we are seeing, that’s really the best you can ask for,” Stewart said.
