BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — For nearly four decades, one Boston-based film festival has been giving Queer cinema the spotlight.
Wicked Queer: Boston's LGBTQ+ Film Festival is in its 39th year, the fourth longest running LGBTQ+ film festival in North America. The festival has celebrated and given a platform to up-and-coming Queer independent filmmakers since it was founded in 1984.
"For me, it’s sort of a vital and important mission to make sure that we have this platform for storytelling and also to promote filmmakers," Executive Director Shawn Cotter told WBZ NewsRadio.
This year's festival will have live screenings at a number of Boston-area locations through April 9, including The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, the Bright Family Screening Room at the Emerson Paramount Center, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Boston University's George Sherman Union Auditorium.
Virtual encore screenings will being on April 10 for those who cannot attend.
"I’m excited this year because we actually have Oscar shortlist pictures," Cotter said. "But I would rather focus on stories that celebrated us and celebrated our joy. We waited for Hollywood to sort of tell our stories and get around to it, but we would be waiting a long time."
