Will MBTA Train Enhancements Include 'Googly Eyes'?

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — There's a movement of sorts to bring a little levity to MBTA commuters.

A group of people marched from Boston Common to MBTA offices at Park Plaza on Monday asking for the 'T' to consider adding 'googly eyes' to the fronts of MBTA trains.

Googly eyes are those round plastic items designed to resemble oversized eyeballs used for humorous effect, or in some cases, to make something that appears threatening, less so.

The group said attaching googly eyes on trains would bring smiles to commuters' faces and add some much-needed humor to people's days, especially when commuting to and from work. "Googly eyes give people a window into the soul of the city," said one member of the group.

Another said googly eyes on trains remind her of an insect. "I feel like it just fits … it kind of has a caterpillar look to it."

For its part, the MBTA said it does see the fun in the group's request and has taken it 'under advisement'.

The group said there is precedent for googly eyes on public transportation.

In Vancouver during the holidays, public transit buses are dressed up like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer using googly eyes and red noses.
