WINTHROP, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was Thursday, June 15, the last day of school at the Arthur T. Cummings Elementary School in Winthrop, and Bill Sarro was hard at work.

The 71-year-old crossing guard was shepherding students and parents across the street when he received something he did not expect: A gift.

"Somebody sticks out this thing, this cup, and they give it to me in a bag, and then I saw a keychain in it too," Sarro told WBZ NewsRadio.

The mug said "Best Crossing Guard Ever" in all caps. The keychain read, “A truly great crossing guard is hard to find, difficult to part with, and impossible to forget."

A Facebook post revealed the gift was from two fifth graders, Lola and Sam, who wanted to say goodbye to Sarro and thank him for his job. Sarro, who spent years cleaning up hazardous waste sites prior to his role as a crossing guard, felt deeply touched.

"That just hit me, you know, it hit me right in the heart," Sarro said. "I’m really looking forward to doing the crossing guard again in the fall."
