CHELSEA, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Chelsea police are investigating after a woman was shot in her car Thursday afternoon.

Police said the shooting occurred near a MBTA Silver Line stop on Washington Avenue around 1 p.m.

The victim, who is in her 60s, was struck while sitting in her vehicle. She attempted to drive herself to the hospital, but was eventually taken by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for a serious chest wound.

She is reportedly in stable condition and expected to survive.

Police said a male suspect was seen fleeing down Sixth Street toward the MBTA Silver Line station after the shooting. A silver Acura that might have been involved in the shooting also fled the scene, but is currently in police custody.

Investigators believe the woman was not the intended target of the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
