BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former local basketball star is going pro.

The Indiana Fever drafter former Worcester Academy forward Aliyah Boston with the 1st overall pick in the WNBA draft Monday night. Boston was the Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year from 2017 to 2019 and was the No. 3 ranked recruit in the 2019 class.

After four years with Worcester Academy, Boston committed to play at the University of South Carolina, where she led the Gamecocks to the 2022 National Championship and won the 2022 Wooden Award, which is given to the best player in women's college basketball. She leaves South Carolina as the most decorated player in program history.

Boston told FeverBasketball.com she was excited to be drafted with the No. 1 pick.

“It’s just really special,” Boston said. “I’m thankful to God just for putting me in this position, but also thankful to everybody in Indiana because they saw something in me. I’m excited to get there and get to work.”
