Worcester Will End School Year Early Because Of Excessive Heat This Week

WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Worcester Public Schools has cancelled school on Thursday, June 20 due to the excessive temperatures predicted in the region. Additionally, Burncoat High School has cancelled school on Friday, June 21. This means that the last day of school for the year will be on Tuesday, June 18 because of the Juneteenth federal holiday on Wednesday.

Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Rachel H. Monárrez said in an email to parents that the safety of the students and staff is of the utmost importance.  

“Because of the age of our buildings, many do not have air conditioning. We regret that we are ending the school year in an abrupt manner, but we want to ensure our students and staff are safe in what are predicted to be unusually hot temperatures.”  

Monárrez also said that the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education guidelines indicate that the missed school days will not need to be made up this school year.
