WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Worcester Police say the K9 that was injured in the line of duty Saturday morning is expected to recover.

K9 Beebs — a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois — assisted when police responded to reports that a man was threatening to "stab bus drivers and light them on fire," according to the Worcester Police Department.

The man was found crouching behind some shrubs on Foster Street when he threatened police officers and refused to come out, despite warnings from an officer that the K9 would be "deployed."

K9 Beebs was released and was stabbed multiple times in the head with a screwdriver while attempting to apprehend the man.

The man was removed by police and arrested.

K9 Beebs was taken to a local animal hospital. He has since been released and is expected to recover.
