WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio— It’s still a week out until the Boston Red Sox home opener at Fenway, but not for Worcester Red Sox fans.

The minor league team played their first home game of the season at Polar Park Friday, and thousands of fans came out to support the team against visitor, the Syracus Mets.

For Anthony, a day out enjoying the ball game at Polar Park is always extra special because he helped built it.

“I grew up playing baseball,” he told WBZ NewsRadio. “When I got the opportunity to work here, I was super excited. Now, I get to come here and share it with my kids. It’s fantastic.”

Fans of the WooSox got to see top Red Sox prospects play before they head to Fenway, like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer.

“That’s one of the reasons why we’re here,” one family said ahead of first pitch. “We thought we’d be seeing the big three, but we’ll see the big two.”

Kyle Teel was traded to the Chicago White Sox in December.

Baseball fans young and old were at the grandstand making memories and traditions.

“We actually came last year, so we’re trying to make it a little tradition for mom and son to go every year,” another fan added.

The Worcester Red Sox lost to the Syracus Mets 4-3.
