WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Saturday, the fire department and larger community of Worcester remembered the six firefighters lost in the "Worcester cold storage and warehouse" fire 23 years ago.
On the anniversary of their sacrifice, the Worcester Fire Department shared words to honor those lost.
Tom Spencer, Tim Jackson, Paul Brotherton, Jerry Lucey, Jay Lyons, and Joe McGuirk of Ladder 2 gave their lives on December 3, 1999, to fight a blaze that was apparently sparked by a knocked over candle in an abandoned building.
Crews were ordered to search for two homeless people that may have been inside the burning building that day, and it was during that search that fire fighters became lost.
The incident led to a number of guideline changes from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
