WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students athletes at Worcester's public and private schools will not be able to participate in sports this fall season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Worcester Telegram, school and city officials met Thursday afternoon and decided to postpone all organized sports for the remainder of the year.
Instead, all school sports games and events in the city will be rescheduled to a season in between winter and spring, scheduled to run from late February through late April 2021.
“I feel super bad for the kids and coaches,” Worcester Public Schools athletic director Dave Shea told the Telegram. “It would have been more ideal to play now than in fall II, but when it comes to the safety and well-being of all our athletes, coaches and everyone involved, I have to side on caution and I have to listen to the people above me saying this is the best thing to do right now.”
The move will impact student athletes at Burncoat High School, Doherty High School, Notre Dame Academy, South High Community School, North High School, and Worcester Tech among others.
On September 16th, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health released its weekly color coded map on COVID-19 risks in each city and town, and it showed Worcester had moved from the moderate risk category of yellow to the high risk category of red.
