FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hanson native Sam Mewis has tasted victory at every level of professional soccer, including on the Olympic stage and in the World Cup. Now her mission is to bring a championship to Boston.
Mewis will serve on the Athlete Advisory Board for Boston's new professional women's soccer team, the Boston Legacy.
The 2019 World Cup champion said she is "super honored" to work with the team and to serve as a role model for girls in the region.
"As a young kid growing up in this area [and] playing in such an incredible sports city, I feel like I had really great role models, but a lot of them were men playing other sports," Mewis said.
The Boston Legacy will play in the National Women's Soccer League, the same league in which Mewis won a championship with the Western New York Flash in 2016.
The team's debut in 2026 will come three years after the NWSL banned four coaches following a sexual harassment investigation. In the wake of that investigation, Mewis said her players will be at the forefront of her mind in her new role.
"The player experience and player safety is of the utmost importance to me," Mewis said. "And I am aligning myself with this club because I can see that it's of the utmost importance to them."
