BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio— It’s a Jazz Worship Service every Thursday night at one of Boston’s most revered churches.

Since 2005, worshippers have enjoyed prayer, preaching and song at the Old South Church in Boston’s Back Bay on Boylston Street.

The Willie Sordillo Ensemble provides the music… a group founded by alto saxophonist Willie Sordillo who wanted his music to appeal to a certain kind of person not looking for a traditional church service.

“I was hoping to bring in people looking for a spiritual community,” he said. “They didn’t necessarily want the traditional service, or even know what they did want. Faith is a jazz thing as far as I’m concerned.”

Associate Minister Ashley Popperson said what she likes most about the Jazz Worship Service, is the calm it brings to her life. “The sacred pause where my spirit settles down and I hear the voice of God in community and through the music," she said.

The historic Old South Church is 350 years old.

Former congregation members include Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Adams.
