WEST ROXBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Teens in Boston can now get free memberships to more than a dozen YMCA of Greater Boston locations throughout the summer.

Starting Sunday, YGB is offering free memberships to teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19 who are currently enrolled in high school as part of its "Get Summer" program.

According to a press release, the initiative aims at "providing young people with safe and productive activities during the months away from school."

"I have a bunch of friends that work here during the summer. It’s nice to be around my community," said Ryan, 15, while filling out a membership application at the Parkway Community YMCA in West Roxbury.

Andy, who works the front desk at Parkway, told WBZ NewsRadio the center is a hub for teens.

"They absolutely enjoy the Y, they love playing basketball out here, meeting up with their friends, pickleball sometimes, swimming for sure," said Andy.

Andy also said it's not just the teens who love the free membership.

"The parents are elated, saves them some money," Andy said. "It’s just more advantageous keeping them out of the streets and then into some regular extracurricular activity here."

The free memberships last until Labor Day, Sept. 2, 2024.
