BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The staff at the Franklin Park Zoo invited the public to help them celebrate a very special birthday this weekend.

'Amari' the giraffe turned 8 years old.

The young Masai giraffe was born at the zoo to her Mom Jana and Dad Beau.

Children who came to Amari's birthday party signed a giant card, posed for selfies with the zoo's costumed giraffe mascot, made their own giraffe masks at the crafts station, and watched Amari enjoy her special birthday ice treats.

Zookeeper Noah Brown said Amari loves the treats and was getting extra-large helpings. "Today is a special day so she's getting a massive amount of ice treats."

As wild giraffe numbers in Africa continue to decline, Franklin Park Zoo is an active participant in the Giraffe Species Survival Plan playing an important role in the protection of the species.
